Environmental Conditions

Lighting
Imagery should be captured between the time of 3 hours after sunrise and 3 hours before sunset. Consistent lighting conditions required for best results, including avoidance of hard shadows cast over the field which cause bright spots and dark spots in the dataset.
Wind
Wind conditions should be within the specified limits of the aircraft or system being used to carry the imaging sensor.
Precipitation
There should be no active precipitation during imagery capture.

Plot NDVI with Uniformity (83004-00)

Description

Normal Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a commonly used indicator of Crop Health that is useful in differentiating a healthy crop from a stress or sensing crop or from bare soil. NDVI uses imagery containing Red and Near-Infrared spectral bands. While NDVI does not necessarily diagnose the source of crop stress, it is a useful metric to quantify variability and location of relative strong and poor crop performance. Uniformity describes variation at the plot-level using statistical summary of sub-plot-level data.

Plot NDRE with Uniformity (83005-00)

Description

Normal Difference Red-Edge Index (NDRE) is a derivate of NDVI using the Red-Edge spectral band rather than the Near-Infrared spectral band. NDRE uses imagery containing Red-Edge and Near-Infrared spectral bands. NDRE is more sensitive to variation in Crop Stress during periods of peak canopy cover than NDVI and is best used for mid-season Crop Health assessment. NDRE is also particularly sensitive to crop nutrient stress, including crop nitrogen status. Uniformity describes variation at the plot-level using statistical summary of sub-plot-level data.

Plot VARI with Uniformity (83003-00)

Description

Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI) provides an approach to assessing Crop Health using only a RGB camera. VARI uses RGB imagery or multispectral imagery with Red, Green, and Blue spectral bands. VARI was developed to correlate with canopy cover and can be used as an indicator of Crop Health when NIR imagery is unavailable (i.e., pseudo-NDVI). Uniformity describes variation at the plot-level using statistical summary of sub-plot-level data.
